Driving south from Gerroa I’m really taken by the trees which line either side of the road. This has got me thinking about the different ways trees feature in the Bible. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon once had a dream of a very large tree which the prophet Daniel explained was intended as a picture of him. Nebuchadnezzar was told the tree would be levelled as a picture of how he himself would be humbled because of his pride. John the Baptist warned the religious leaders of his day that the axe was positioned at the root of the tree on account of their pride, and Jesus himself cursed a fig tree as a sign of displeasure at what people were doing. These stand in contrast to the tree of Psalm 1, depicted as healthy on account of the person it symbolises having a right relationship with God. Each week at St Peter’s, we consider what constitutes true spiritual health. Jesus said it comes from being connected to him, the life-giving vine whose branches are able to bear fruit. We’d love to have you join us as we consider these things.
